What can I do now?
In response to the theological crisis in the ELCA, clearly
revealed by (but certainly not limited to) the vote at the August
2009 churchwide assembly in Minneapolis, many congregations,
pastors, and individual members are questioning their continued
involvement with the ELCA church body.
Lutheran CORE recognizes that there can be faithful reasons for
remaining in the ELCA organization in spite of disapproval of its
actions. Some people feel called to remain as a voice for
traditional Lutheran teaching and practice in the ELCA. Others may
choose to remain due to procedural difficulties associated with
disaffiliating from the ELCA.
Lutheran CORE also recognizes the desire and need for many ELCA
members to pursue other options for denominational affiliation. Some
congregations have voted to become members of Lutheran Congregations
in Mission for Christ (LCMC www.lcmc.net), an association of
independent congregations with loosely structured leadership. Other
members have expressed the desire for an alternative to the ELCA
that has a more traditional denominational structure. Lutheran CORE
is in the process of developing this alternative church body, yet to
be named. Lutheran CORE, however, will continue as a “free-standing
synod,” a connection point for faithful Lutherans, regardless of
affiliation.
Members of the Lutheran CORE – Northwestern Minnesota committee can
assist you as you explore these options. Feel free to contact us.
